Healthtech startup Definition Health sets sights on Miami to streamline surgery care with AI – Refresh Miami

When it comes to surgery, anxiety often starts long before the operation. Patients worry about the unknown: what to expect, how to prepare, and what happens after they go home. This was something Dr. Sandeep Chauhan noticed early on in his career as a surgeon. That’s why Chauhan co-founded Definition Health, a startup built around a vision to improve the surgical experience through technology.

“It was born out of frustration as a surgeon trying to improve care,” Chauhan told Refresh Miami. Patients were not being engaged properly before and after surgery. “We wanted to put patients at the center of the journey and create a digital platform for the entire process,” he said.

Definition Health’s AI-powered platform is designed to do exactly that: streamline every step of the surgical process, from pre-op preparation to post-op recovery. And it’s proving successful. In the U.K., where the company has already helped hospitals save millions and improve readiness, over 300,000 patients have benefited from the service. The platform’s ability to reduce inefficiencies has saved the National Health Service (NHS) nearly £2 million per 40,000 patients.

Now, Chauhan and his co-founder, Dr. Rosie Scott, are ready to bring their technology to the U.S., starting with Miami, a hub for healthcare innovation. “We’ve had several conversations with key players in Miami,” Chauhan said, noting the city’s tech-savvy workforce and robust healthcare system as major attractions. “Miami is the perfect base for us to expand throughout the U.S.”

What sets Definition Health apart from other solutions is the way it integrates patient care across the entire surgical pathway. “Our platform isn’t just a point solution; it’s an end-to-end tool,” Chauhan explained. By combining AI, machine learning, and multimedia technologies, the platform helps patients prepare better for surgery and receive continuous monitoring during recovery, no matter where they are.

This continuous monitoring, or “virtual ward,” is one of the company’s key innovations. Once patients leave the hospital, they can still be connected to their healthcare team. “Patients feel almost like VIPs because they know we’re monitoring them 24/7,” Chauhan said. This not only provides peace of mind but also helps catch potential post-op complications early, reducing the need for unnecessary readmissions.

Definition Health’s business model involves licensing the platform to healthcare providers, who then connect their patients to it. The technology has proven to reduce operating costs, decrease delays, and even generate revenue for hospitals and surgeons through optimization codes. This blend of cost efficiency and enhanced care has caught the attention of several U.S. hospitals already, according to Chauhan.

“We’ve had a huge amount of interest because the platform helps improve safety and care quality in ways that existing systems simply don’t,” Chauhan said. Hospitals see the advantage of having one solution that covers the entire surgical journey, from patient intake to recovery.

Looking forward, Chauhan is particularly excited about what the company’s AI can do. The platform’s predictive modeling, for example, uses large datasets to predict how well a patient will fare during surgery. “We can identify risk factors before surgery and intervene,” Chauhan said, adding that AI like this builds trust because it leads to better patient outcomes.

As the company gears up for its U.S. expansion, Chauhan is looking forward to building a team in Miami and scaling across the country. “There’s a huge appetite for pathway solutions like ours,” he said. With 27 full-time employees and over $2 million in annual recurring revenue, Definition Health is poised to make a splash stateside.
