PlayVirtuoso was a finalist in our 2022 Music Ally SI:X startups contest, before becoming one of Spotify’s first partners for video courses in March 2024. Now the company has a new name.
It has rebranded as Whatclass, with this week’s relaunch focusing on its collection of short-form music-education videos from experts including artists Moonchild Sannelly, Skream, Joe Goddard and Novelist; DJ and podcaster Jamz Supernova; and songwriter/producer Fraser T. Smith.
Some of the videos last less than 90 seconds, while the longest are up to 12 minutes in length. Music production, remixing and editing; songwriting, DJing and collaboration are among the topics covered.
Some of the courses are free to watch, while others require a paid membership. The latter currently costs £11.99 a month, with a discount for users who pay annually.
As part of the relaunch, board advisor Chris Byatte has become co-founder and chief technology officer at Whatclass.
His background is interesting: he founded mobile games publisher Chillingo, which back in the day was the publisher of developer Rovio’s first Angry Birds game.
“We’re creating a future where modern music learning is fast, relevant, and culturally iconic — led by artists shaping the sound of today. On-demand, bite-size classes with no fluff — just pure, creative signal,” wrote Byatte in a LinkedIn post announcing the news, which he described as “A reset. A rethink. A rebirth”.
