The Victoria government in Australia has provided financial support for 16 technology startups focused on renewable energy innovations, with several projects directly addressing critical challenges in EV charging infrastructure and grid integration.
As revealed by the state government, the companies selected for the CivVic EnergyTech Challenge delivered by LaunchVic will receive funding and mentorship to develop solutions that promise to transform Victoria’s energy system while accelerating EV adoption across the state.
The programme provides participants with AU$10,000 (US$6,440) in equity-free funding during a 12-week boot camp. Four standout teams will be eligible to receive an additional AU$35,000 at the initiative’s conclusion.
CivVic EnergyTech Challenge is structured to help these startups test, refine, and develop their ideas while working directly with government stakeholders to deliver practical outcomes for Victoria’s energy system and consumers.
The programme focuses on several areas relevant to EV infrastructure development, including smart solar batteries, electric vehicle charging, and next-generation electricity grid maintenance.
The challenge specifically mentions EV charging as one of the key innovation areas being explored by the selected startups.
Specifically, the programme is divided into two streams: the Empowering People and Communities stream, which aims to help households and small businesses adopt renewable energy technologies, and the Powering the Grid of the Future stream, which is focused on technology that can transform energy generation, storage, and distribution.
EV charging innovations span both categories, addressing consumer-facing solutions and grid integration challenges.
Lily D’Ambrosio, the Victoria minister for energy and resources, emphasised that these startups are developing practical solutions to support Victoria’s transition to renewable energy while helping to lower power bills.
“This program is about finding solutions to support households, businesses and the grid as we move towards a renewable energy future and lower power bills,” D’Ambrosio added.
Australian EV sales reach record high in Q2 2025
In other news, data released by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) shows Australians purchased 29,244 new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) between April and June 2025, representing a substantial 63.3% increase from the previous quarter.
This surge pushed BEVs to a 9.3% market share of all new light vehicle sales, setting another record for the Australian market.
When combined with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which accounted for 11,902 sales, the total number of plug-in vehicles reached 41,146 units or approximately 13.1% of all new vehicles sold during the quarter.
As reported by EV Infrastructure News, medium SUVs have emerged as a key battleground for EV adoption. They became the first market segment where combined sales of BEVs and hybrids surpassed internal combustion engine vehicles. BEVs alone accounted for 22.24% of all new medium SUV sales, just behind hybrids at 23.92%.
