The government has introduced the country’s first artificial intelligence (AI) platform named “kagoj.ai” developed specifically for the Bangla language, alongside the launch of a new Bangla font called “July” intended for official and institutional use.
The AI platform, and the font, were formally unveiled on December 15 at an event organised by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division at a hotel in Dhaka.
Speaking at the programme, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser at the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology said, “Around 4,000 users had tested the platform over the past two weeks as part of a pilot phase.”
Faiz Taiyeb added that the government plans to make the platform’s application programming interface (API) publicly available to encourage wider use, and that the source code would also be released while maintaining cybersecurity safeguards.
He added that the initiative would expand beyond Bangla to include the collection of oral language data from different ethnic communities, with the aim of preserving linguistic diversity in digital spaces.
The newly introduced July font has been developed for formal and institutional use and is intended to address technical limitations associated with computer-based Bangla typing, according to those involved in the project.
Users who register on kagoj.ai would receive 1,000 credits to use the platform, with additional credits available free of charge upon request once the initial allocation is exhausted.
Both the AI platform and the font were developed under a Bangladesh Computer Council project aimed at strengthening the Bangla language through research and development in information technology, under the supervision of the ICT Division.
