According to EE Times, Qatar is deploying its sovereign capital to build a technology strategy focused on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing. The Qatar Investment Authority is making investments across the technology stack with an emphasis on developing domestic talent as a foundation for a deep tech industry.

Qatar’s AI Ambitions Span the Tech Stack

The country is investing sovereign wealth into multiple levels of the AI technology stack. The strategy aims to build a talent pipeline, attract deep-tech startups, and construct AI data centers to support local AI-based businesses. Executives from Ayar Labs and D-Matrix provided perspective on which parts of the stack a nation like Qatar should prioritize.

The Sovereign Quantum Race Starts Before Quantum Advantage

Sovereign quantum computing is a strategic priority for nations, with some investing in the quantum ecosystem and hardware despite the relative immaturity of the technology. Executives from quantum computing companies noted the potential for trillion-dollar industries based on quantum but also warned of risks associated with sovereign efforts turning into techno-nationalism.

Imec to Open R&D Center in Qatar

The research organization imec will shortly open a research and development center in Qatar, which will act as its hub for the Gulf Cooperation Council region. The center is supported by Invest Qatar and the Qatar Research, Development & Innovation Council and has begun hiring. Imec anticipates benefiting from access to talent that may face visa challenges for the U.S. or Europe, while Qatar aims to establish a talent pipeline to seed a semiconductor industry.

Positron’s $230M Funding Round

AI chip startup Positron announced a $230 million funding round at Web Summit Qatar. The Series B round, intended to develop and deploy its AI-specific integrated circuit named Asimov, was led by strategic investors Arena Private Wealth and Jump Trading, both financial trading firms based in Chicago. Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund, the QIA, also participated as a new investor in the round.
