Here is a paradox worth sitting with. India’s Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced artificial intelligence as an optional subject from Class 9 onwards.
The Union Budget for 2025 set aside Rs 500 crore for an AI Centre of Excellence in Education and rolled out the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) initiative for students from Class 6 to Class 12 and educators. This year, in the Union Budget, the finance minister proposed a High-Powered ‘Education to Employment and Enterprise’ Standing Committee to assess how emerging technologies, including AI, will impact jobs and skill requirements, and to recommend measures for the education sector accordingly.
