Californian tech start-up Twin Health uses AI to create people’s identical metabolic twin, which can help to treat diabetes and aid weight loss without the need for drugs.
In recent months, there’s been a huge increase in demand for GLP-1 drugs, like Ozempic, to help people lose weight and tackle diabetes.
But Twin Health says they can offer a drug-free, high-tech alternative, combining AI and wearables.
And the company says it’s already making a huge impact on people’s health, with a new study confirming just how effective it actually is.

Twin Health gathers a user’s data to create an AI metabolic twin
Those who sign-up with Twin Health are sent a fitness tracker, blood pressure cuff, smart scale, and continuous glucose monitor.
These devices then collect a wealth of data about the person’s blood sugar, activity level, sleep, stress, weight, and blood pressure, which is all combined into a single app.
The app then uses AI to analyze the data and generate a digital metabolic replica of the person, a bit like a virtual identical twin.
Throughout the day, the user logs their meals into the app, where they’re analyzed by AI and given a rating based on their nutritional content, with green being the healthiest pick and red being the worst.
The app can then predict how the food will impact the person’s blood sugar levels.
The clever app will also make personalized recommendations for the user, to help them make healthier choices when it comes to food and exercise.
“Traditional solutions have focused on just managing the disease,” Twin Health Founder and CEO Jahangir Mohammed said.
“Twin is different. We address the root causes of chronic metabolic diseases to improve and reverse diabetes. Members use their own biomarker data – not population averages – to create their own AI digital twin that guides them in a way that is engaging, precise, and sustainable.”
Although it might sound a little bit out there, a recent peer-reviewed study in the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst found that Twin can help those with Type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar without the need for glucose-lowering medications and lose weight.
The study found that 71 percent of Twin Health users managed to lower their A1C below 6.5 percent, the healthy range, compared to just 2.4 percent of people receiving ‘standard care’.
The group using Twin also lost more weight, while ‘significantly reducing their reliance on medications’.

The company recently received a $53 million investment
One user told Wired that the app’s instant feedback and recommendations helps to keep him on track and revealed that it helped him lose more than 70lbs to hit his goal weight.
Twin Health is now hoping to expand to reach more people via health plans and was recently given a $53 million investment from Denmark’s Maj Invest to help meet that goal.
“Twin Health represents a paradigm shift in diabetes and obesity care – one that is precise to each individual and scalable for employers and health plans,” Maj Invest CEO Jeppe Christianson said.
The company says it offers results-driven pricing, with clients only having to pay when their members hit ‘meaningful clinical outcomes, such as A1C reduction, weight loss, or medication elimination’.
