Tanzanian electric mobility company Jenga Taifa Pamoja Auto Limited (JTP Auto) is pursuing a dual partnership with Chinese automakers Geely and Dongfeng Motor Corporation to drive electric vehicle adoption in East Africa. This collaboration aims at introducing a range of affordable EVs which includes electric trucks, compact cars, and minivans, designed to meet the needs of Tanzania’s price-conscious market.
This collaboration is targeted at two goals which are bringing in EVs to establish an instant market place while establishing the tone for local assembly in Tanzania. Within the next two years, JTP Auto aims to set up electric vehicle assembly operations in Tanzania, while collaborating with regional institutions like the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology to develop technical knowledge and transfer skills.
The startup’s approach centers on developing a local EV ecosystem in Tanzania while embracing Chinese manufacturing experience. China’s second-largest automaker, Geely and Dongfeng will provide technical expertise and supply chain support to JTP Auto. This partnership is expected to help the company overcome challenges that have obstructed EV adoption in Africa such as high initial expenses, inadequate infrastructure for charging, and uncertainty from customers.
Tanzania’s broader environmental and economic objectives are in line with the project. The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) could boost energy security and reduce urban air pollution by increasing domestic power use and reducing the dependence on imported petroleum. According to analysts, collaborations between African startups and foreign EV manufacturers could be crucial in speeding up the continent’s shift to sustainable modes of transportation.
