OpenAI has confirmed it is discontinuing its Sora video platform, the tool that allowed users to generate and share AI-created video clips.
“Saying goodbye to the Sora app” was not an easy decision, the team behind the product said in a post on X, adding: “To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.”
The move reflects a wider strategic shift at the ChatGPT maker, which is directing computing power and engineering resources toward enterprise tools and coding products ahead of a potential stock market listing later this year, according to a Reuters report on the matter.
Sora first gained attention in early 2024 for its ability to generate high-quality, cinematic videos from simple text prompts. A standalone app followed in September 2025, adding a social feed where users could post their creations. People used the tool to produce short films, animated sequences, and recreations of scenes from popular films and television shows.
As per Reuters, the decision also brings an end to a planned $1 billion partnership with Disney, announced three months ago. Under the proposed three-year deal, Disney would have invested in OpenAI and allowed more than 200 of its characters to appear in short AI-generated videos. According to sources familiar with the matter, the agreement never closed, and no money was exchanged.
The announcement came a day after OpenAI had published safety guidelines for the platform, and some employees on the Sora team were not made aware of the decision until the morning of the announcement, according to people with knowledge of the situation, states the Reuters report.
In the official post on X, the company has said it will provide further details on how users can preserve their existing work and share timelines for the platform’s closure.
