Kiwi Appoints Sumeet Basrani as Chief Business Officer to Drive UPI Credit Expansion - Indian Startup Times

Fintech startup Kiwi has appointed Sumeet Basrani as its Chief Business Officer (CBO), as the company looks to strengthen its leadership team and scale its credit offerings on UPI.

The move comes at a time when Kiwi is shifting its focus from early product adoption to large-scale distribution, particularly through partnerships with banks and ecosystem players.

Leadership with Strong Industry Experience

Sumeet Basrani brings over 15 years of experience in the cards and payments space. He has previously worked with organisations such as CRED, OneCard, ICICI Bank, and Visa.

In his most recent role at CRED, he played a key role in building and scaling partnerships across credit cards, payments, and lending, working closely with banks and financial institutions.

Focus on Scaling Credit on UPI

At Kiwi, Basrani will lead efforts to expand access to credit on UPI, targeting millions of users across the country. The company is now focused on moving from a strong product foundation to wider market adoption, in line with changing consumer payment behaviour.

Speaking on the opportunity, Basrani highlighted that credit on UPI is at an inflection point, with early adoption already underway. He added that the next phase will be about seamlessly integrating credit into everyday transactions while improving accessibility.

About Kiwi

Founded in 2022 by Siddharth Mehta, Mohit Bedi, and Anup Agrawal, Kiwi enables users to access RuPay credit cards on UPI, combining the convenience of credit with UPI’s widespread acceptance across merchants.

The company has also seen strong investor interest. In August last year, Kiwi raised $24 million in its Series B round from Vertex Ventures at a valuation exceeding $100 million.

With this leadership addition, Kiwi is aiming to strengthen its position in the evolving digital payments and credit ecosystem in India.
