Nvidia unveils new AI tool to make video games look more realistic


Nvidia has announced DLSS 5, a new artificial intelligence tool designed to enhance the visual realism of video games.

The technology uses an AI model to generate photorealistic lighting and materials in real time during gameplay. It analyses game frames and enhances them with effects such as realistic lighting, reflections, and detailed textures on elements like characters, hair, fabric, and skin.

The company described the update as its most significant advancement in computer graphics since the introduction of real-time ray tracing in 2018. Unlike traditional rendering, which requires substantial computing power, DLSS 5 aims to deliver improved visuals while maintaining smooth performance at up to 4K resolution.

The system is trained to understand complex scene elements and environmental lighting conditions, generating images that remain consistent with the original 3D content. Game developers can adjust the intensity and application of enhancements to preserve each game’s unique visual style.

Nvidia says that major publishers, including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Ubisoft, Tencent, and Warner Bros. Games, have already committed to supporting the technology. Titles expected to feature DLSS 5 include Starfield, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

DLSS was originally introduced in 2018 as a performance-boosting tool for upscaling resolution and generating frames. The company noted it has since been integrated into more than 750 games.
