As the number of Indian students pursuing global education continues to rise, access to affordable and flexible financing remains a critical challenge. Addressing this gap, Skillsvest has raised ₹5.5 crore in a pre-seed funding round, combining both equity and debt to accelerate its mission of making international education more accessible.
The round was led by Plug and Play Ventures, with participation from angel investors including Sascha Mornell. The startup is also backed by global accelerators such as UC Berkeley SkyDeck and Launch Accelerator, strengthening its global credibility early in its journey.
Rethinking Student Loans with Outcome-Based Financing
Founded by Sreemaan Thiruppathiraja and Deborah Schermann, Skillsvest is building a fintech solution centered on a simple yet powerful idea: students should only repay when they start earning.
Unlike traditional education loans that require collateral, co-signers, and immediate repayment obligations, Skillsvest offers a “pay only if you earn” model. Under this approach:
- Students can access funding without pledging assets
- Repayments are linked to income levels
- Payments begin only after crossing a defined earning threshold
This structure reduces financial pressure on students and aligns repayment with actual career outcomes, making higher education financing more equitable and outcome-driven.
Focused on the Global Education Journey
Skillsvest is currently focused on Indian students pursuing master’s programmes in international markets, including the UK, US, and Europe.
The platform covers both tuition fees and living expenses, addressing a key pain point for students who often struggle to secure comprehensive funding through traditional channels.
With increasing costs of overseas education, such alternative financing models are becoming critical in enabling students to access global opportunities without taking on disproportionate financial risk.
Early Traction Signals Strong Demand
Despite being at an early stage, Skillsvest has demonstrated promising traction:
- ₹1.2 crore+ already deployed in student financing
- 3,000+ students on its waitlist
- Partnerships with 4,500+ college counsellors across India
This growing distribution network plays a key role in reaching students at the decision-making stage, while also strengthening the company’s pipeline of potential users.
Scaling Capital, Compliance, and Partnerships
The newly raised capital will be deployed across three key areas:
- Scaling student financing to support more applicants
- Strengthening regulatory readiness in a highly governed financial ecosystem
- Expanding institutional partnerships across education and career networks
As fintech and education intersect, regulatory compliance and trust-building will be essential for long-term growth—areas where Skillsvest is actively investing.
Building Beyond Financing: A Career Outcomes Ecosystem
Over the next 12–18 months, Skillsvest aims to support 50–100 students, while also expanding its vision beyond financing.
The startup is working toward building a broader career outcomes ecosystem, where funding is closely tied to employability, income potential, and long-term career success.
This approach reflects a larger shift in education financing from simply providing capital to enabling measurable career outcomes.
The Road Ahead
As India continues to be one of the largest contributors to the global student population, the demand for innovative financing solutions is only set to grow. By combining income-linked repayments, global exposure, and strong distribution partnerships, Skillsvest is positioning itself at the intersection of fintech and education.
Its “pay only if you earn” model not only reduces risk for students but also aligns incentives across the ecosystem creating a more sustainable and inclusive pathway to international education.
In a market long dominated by rigid loan structures, Skillsvest’s approach signals a shift toward flexible, outcome-driven financial solutions a trend that could redefine how students fund their global ambitions.
