Grindr acquires LGBTQ+ health startup Freddie

Grindr is acquiring health startup Freddie for US$250m in its first major acquisition, expanding into HIV-prevention telehealth and pharmacy services.

The dating app plans to integrate Freddie’s services into Grindr Health, which brings its healthcare offerings together through an in-app portal.

Freddie provides telehealth access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), medication taken before exposure to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV.

Grindr Health builds on Woodwork, the company’s telehealth business launched in 2025 to connect users with medication for weight loss and erectile dysfunction.

As of Wednesday, when the acquisition was announced, users could access services from Freddie and Woodwork through the Grindr Health portal.

PrEP is 99 per cent effective at reducing the sexual transmission of HIV.

More than 644,000 people in the US were using PrEP in 2025, up 10 per cent from 2024. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 2.2 million Americans could benefit from the medication.

Grindr reports that 400,000 of its millions of US users identify as being on PrEP.

George Arison, chief executive of Grindr, said: “It’s a situation where everybody that can be on this drug should be on this drug, because it’s healthier for them and healthier for people that they meet.”

“To us, [PrEP access] seems like a natural opportunity and a win-win, to both build a great business as well as do something really important for public health.”

Arison said matching Freddie’s share of the Canadian PrEP market in the US could result in another 200,000 people using the medication and, by his estimate, around 5,000 fewer HIV infections each year.

The most recent CDC figures cited estimate 31,800 new HIV infections in the US annually.

The acquisition is part of Grindr’s effort to expand beyond its core dating service with additional health and social features.

Woodwork initially offered erectile dysfunction medication and has since expanded to include GLP-1 medicines.

Grindr has also been developing AI-powered features intended to improve the app experience and provide information about people users may want to connect with.

Arison said: “Don’t think of Grindr as a dating product. Think of Grindr as a social network that has a very unique pulse on the user base.

“Obviously, we needed to prove to everyone that that’s what we were. This is just a logical next step in that direction.”

Grindr reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of US$138m, up 33 per cent year on year.

Its paying user base reached 1.4 million, including subscribers to its XTRA and Unlimited tiers, up 16 per cent from the previous year.

The company had previously used its platform to connect more than two million users with mpox vaccines in 2022.

Morgan Stanley analysts pointed to Grindr’s existing telehealth activity through Woodwork when assessing the rationale for the Freddie acquisition.

Freddie also generates revenue through referral fees involving organisations receiving federal discounts under the US 340B Drug Pricing Program.

Each active patient is estimated to generate US$4,800 in annual revenue.

Grindr’s baseline target of 50,000 users obtaining PrEP through the app would therefore represent US$240m in annual revenue.

Arison said the acquisition supports “a much broader Grindr Health vision”.

That could eventually include connecting users with healthcare professionals who are part of, or have expertise in, LGBTQ+ health.

Arison said: “I talk to so many people—myself included, honestly—who want a gay doctor and cannot get a gay doctor.

“Over time, we can be in a place where we’re giving way more capability to our users to find gay doctors, and be able to connect with them virtually for their other healthcare needs.”
