Kenyan electric mobility leader Roam just launched Roam Explorer, an AI-driven intelligence platform designed to solve the “visibility gap” in Africa’s EV sector.

By tracking everything from battery health to real-time location, Roam is shifting from just building hardware to managing a connected ecosystem.

How It Works

Roam Explorer acts as a “smart spine” for motorcycles, buses, and tuk-tuks.

  • Rural-Ready: It operates on 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, ensuring a motorcycle in a remote village is just as visible as one in Nairobi.
  • Dual Interface: Users can monitor data via a smartphone app or—crucially—control key functions via SMS for areas with low data penetration.
  • Predictive AI: The system analyzes temperature and performance trends to flag maintenance before a breakdown occurs.

Why It Matters

Scaling electric vehicle (EV) fleets in Africa has long been hampered by two hurdles: inconsistent network connectivity and high risk for lenders.

  • For Operators: Real-time data prevents the “sudden death” of batteries, which are the most expensive part of the vehicle.
  • For Financiers: Lenders (like M-KOPA) get the transparency they need to lower interest rates and expand asset financing for drivers who lack traditional collateral.
