Assessing ‘Founder Mode’, ‘AI Readiness’ at top AI/Mag 7 big tech companies.

AI: Reset to Zero

Apple announced Tim Cook is handing the CEO reins to hardware chief John Ternus this September — fifteen years after Cook took over from Steve Jobs. A useful moment to look at the state of “AI-ready” governance across the AI Top 9: the traditional Mag 7 plus Anthropic and OpenAI. Roughly $20 trillion in combined market cap — over a third of the S&P 500. Historic concentration. Echoes of the Nifty Fifty of the ‘60s–’70s.

Three Key Takes today:

(1) Non-founder Mag 7 CEOs have navigated early AI in ‘close enough’ Founder Mode. “The non-founder CEOs of the Mag 7s — Satya, Sundar, Andy, and Tim/John — have in my view navigated these early days of the AI Tech Wave in ‘close enough’ Founder mode. They internalized the startup lessons from prior tech waves, and leveraged their incumbencies to lean into the big opportunity.” Satya’s early OpenAI bet (AI-RTZ #1048) came years before public investors accepted it. Sundar’s sure-footed post-ChatGPT execution (AI-RTZ #924) forced OpenAI into its own Code Red. Jassy is running ~$200B+ in AI infra at AWS (AI-RTZ #992). Cook/Ternus: Bloomberg on Cook’s 15-year legacy + Stratechery on Cook’s impeccable timing.

(2) Founder/CEOs Running Incumbents Like Their Companies’ Lives Depend on It. “Which is not to take away from the Founder/CEOs of the remaining Mag 7, who are absolutely running their incumbent tech companies like their companies’ lives depend on it all with the AI Tech Wave to come. And it does.” Zuck — founder mode never left. Elon — vertical AI compute + robotics + data gravity across Tesla/SpaceX/xAI. Jensen33+ years at the helm, the longest founder run in the Mag 7, and Nvidia is the reference-design vendor for every other Mag 7’s AI buildout. Naming-history callback at AI-RTZ #876 — FAANG to MANGO.

(3) The ‘AI Mainframe Era’ Is Exactly When You Want Founder-Mode-ish Non-Founder CEOs. “In this ‘AI Mainframe Era’ of the early AI Tech Wave, where the big incumbents have extraordinary opportunities, it’s exactly when this time we needed CEOs who could act in ‘Founder Mode,’ even if they were second or third generation CEOs after their original founder CEOs.” Not a contrarian take — a synthesis. Paul Graham’s Founder Mode argues companies scale better when founders ignore conventional management advice. The muscle matters more than the title when you’re sitting on incumbent distribution + compute + data + balance sheet. AI Tech Wave context. The best scenario long-term public and private investors could have hoped for — despite plentiful headwinds ahead.

Plus: Gadget AI — the other big Apple promotion yesterday was Johny Srouji to Chief of Hardware (Apple Silicon fame). Extraordinary bearing on AI-enabled wearables and hardware amid memory/chip supply constraints, trade and tariff geopolitics, and supply concentration. Two 50-year-old Mag 7 companies — Microsoft and Apple — are now on their 3rd-generation senior management, and both handled the founder-to-professional transition well enough to keep leaning into AI.

Closing Qs — founder/CEO AI company that is NOT Mag 7 yet: Aravind Srinivas of Perplexity — the founder-mode AI-native challenger to the Mag 7 search moat. Non-Mag 7 company run as if in founder mode outside US: Alibaba in China — Jack Ma’s imprint still shapes the operating tempo. Stay tuned.

Both are daily. Both are free. Both are about AI. But they’re different mediums carrying different messages.
