Fresenius invests in Munich-based healthtech startup Avelios Medical – Munich Startup


With the globally active, therapy-focused healthcare company and Europe’s
Fresenius, the largest private hospital operator, is investing in another company. Avelios Medical and thus contribute to the development of an open, interoperable and AI-native digital health ecosystem for Europe.

Avelios is not only receiving capital, but also access to clinical care practices from one of Europe’s largest private hospital networks. According to company figures, Fresenius Helios provides care to approximately 27 million people annually in around 140 hospitals and outpatient facilities.

Fresenius integrates clinical processes into the Avelios platform

Fresenius will contribute real clinical requirements and proven processes from various hospitals to the further development of the Avelios solution. This will bring the scaling of the hospital information system (HIS) more in line with clinical practice. The platform will be shaped not only by technology, but also by standardized workflows from everyday clinical practice.

SAP had already announced this in February 2026. strategically invested in AveliosThe cloud-native HIS is to be operated on the SAP Business Technology Platform and support AI, data management, and integration into SAP systems.

Why AI-native HIS is strategically important

Hospital information systems are considered a central infrastructure for digital healthcare. Avelios relies on a structured data model, open standards, and interoperability. All of these are prerequisites for the reliable use of AI applications in hospital operations.

Fresenius describes the investment as a building block of a digital health ecosystem; Avelios is developing a modular HIS that digitizes clinical and administrative processes and is intended to enable sovereign data use.

Who is Avelios Medical?

Avelios Medical was founded in Munich in 2020 by Christian Albrecht, Nicolas Jacob, and Dr. Sebastian Krammer. The idea originated from an AI research project at LMU Munich. Today, the company positions itself as a provider of a modular, data-driven hospital information system.

The deal is significant for Munich’s startup ecosystem because Avelios is integrating two major players in the software and utilities sectors, SAP and Fresenius, into its platform. According to the startup, it will remain independent, founder-led, and positioned to be open to various industries.
