Jeff Bezos is putting serious money behind the idea that AI can reinvent how we discover new materials. His family office, Bezos Expeditions, is participating in a roughly $400 million funding round for CuspAI, a Cambridge-based startup that uses generative AI to accelerate materials discovery for clean technology and semiconductors.
The round reportedly values CuspAI at approximately $2.6 billion. That’s a staggering jump from its $520 million valuation just last September, when the company closed a $100 million Series A. The company was founded around 2024.
What CuspAI actually does
CuspAI uses generative AI to simulate and predict which material compositions will perform best for specific industrial applications, dramatically compressing the timeline that traditional lab-based materials science requires.
CuspAI has already locked in partnerships with some heavy hitters. ASML, the Dutch company that essentially has a monopoly on advanced chipmaking equipment, is a partner. So are Meta and Hyundai Motor Group. Its advisory board includes Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun.
The investor lineup and what it signals
Bezos Expeditions isn’t the only marquee name on the cap table. Kleiner Perkins is also leading the round. Prior backers include NEA and Temasek, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund.
The deal reportedly has term sheets signed, though as of mid-June it had not yet formally closed.
Going from $520 million to $2.6 billion in roughly nine months implies that either the company’s commercial traction has accelerated dramatically, or investor appetite for AI-adjacent infrastructure plays has reached a fever pitch.
With $500 million in total funding raised across two rounds, partnerships with ASML, Meta, and Hyundai, and advisors Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun, CuspAI has positioned itself as the category leader before the category is even fully defined.
