He worked at IIM Calcutta where he recruited around 280 students and handled internship-related activities for about 360 students. These duties provided him with exposure to management, coordination, and networking within the profession.

On finishing school, Majety started his career in investment banking at Nomura International in London. But he ultimately decided to enter the world of entrepreneurship in India, opting out of his corporate career. His academic years in BITS Pilani and IIM Calcutta along with his working experience enabled him to face the tough challenges of establishing a business. He later joined Nandan Reddy to establish Swiggy in 2014, and began his tenure in the India startup world.

After completing his management education, Majety entered the financial sector. He began working with Nomura International, a financial services company. He was a summer analyst in 2010 and was exposed to the fields of fixed-income trading strategies and structured credit trading.

In July 2011, he joined the company as an associate and worked at its rates trading desk in London.

He traveled around Europe and Asia for approximately six months on his own with limited finances prior to his return to India.

On his trip, he covered around 3,500 km from Portugal to Greece in three months. He also visited the countries by public transport and other available means such as Turkey and Kazakhstan. It was a journey that allowed him time to experience new places, meet new people and contemplate his future.

Sriharsha Majety’s entrepreneurial journey: From Bundl to Swiggy

Sriharsha Majety entered into the entrepreneurial world in 2013 when he and his co-founder Nandan Reddy started Bundl, which is a startup in the logistics space. The company’s objective was to tackle the logistics and delivery issues in India and make it easier for businesses to efficiently move the goods.

But, due to difficulties in the logistics sector, Bundl did not have the best chances of coming up with a sustainable business model. This spurred the founders to reconsider their business approach and look for new business opportunities in the market.

After evaluating their options, Majety and Reddy decided to focus on the growing demand for online food delivery services. They started Swiggy, an online food delivery service in 2014, that would let a person order food from nearby restaurants online with ease and convenience.

The platform enabled people to view the restaurants, order them online and get the food delivered to their doorsteps.

Swiggy employed technology to bridge the gap between restaurants, customers and delivery partners, all in one go. It was designed to solve some of the typical problems in the food delivery industry, such as coordinating orders and deliveries. The company gradually added more restaurants to its fold and delivery services, making it one of India’s most prominent food delivery apps.

When the company switched from Bundl to Swiggy, it marked an important milestone in Sriharsha Majety’s career. Rather than suffer the pain of perishing due to a failing business model, the founders saw a new opportunity for the market and adjusted their course. The success story of Swiggy demonstrates that understanding customer needs, leveraging technology, and adjusting business strategies are crucial for creating successful enterprises.
