How This Startup Built An Electric Semi Faster Than Tesla

Windrose Electric, founded by Stanford graduate Han Wen in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2022, has delivered its first production-ready, long-haul electric semi-truck to Texas logistics firm Allogic for $285,000. Having said that, the focal discussion is about how Windrose went from a blank canvas in 2022 to the delivery of a fully certified and road-legal class 8 semi-truck in 2026.

Idea to Delivery

A stark comparison to Windrose is the Tesla Semi; first announced in 2017 with production said to begin in 2019 at a starting price of $150,000 for the low-range variant. However, 9 years after its announcement in 2017, aside from a few pilot trucks for Pepsico in 2022 and having missed earlier production deadlines, the Tesla Semi is finally set to enter production this year, with starting prices potentially exceeding $300,000. So, how did a competitor that began its existence five years after the announcement of the Tesla Semi all but match Tesla’s production and delivery timelines, while Tesla is neither able to meet its production deadlines nor pricing targets?

While Tesla is committed to building its Semi at its Nevada Gigafactory, Windrose chose a more conventional industry approach to manufacturing – with core components like the high-capacity, long-life LFP batteries being sourced from China’s incredibly well-developed EV industry, and final assembly taking place in Antwerp, Belgium. This approach to manufacturing, as well as their parallel certification strategy across continents (certifications which typically take manufacturers several years to procure), significantly accelerated Windrose’s time-to-market. Finally, Windrose developed its semi as an integration platform for existing technologies rather than designing and developing proprietary solutions, with partners such as Kempower, Greenlane, and Geotab, amongst others, providing software and charging infrastructure solutions.

The Windrose semi aims to be the electric semi of choice for long-haul journeys; it costs about as much as Tesla’s Semi, and offers a claimed range of 420 miles, marginally lower than Tesla’s 500-mile claimed range, with a charging system that prioritizes compatibility. While its range is lower than Tesla’s, it is significantly higher than the class 8 semis currently offered by Peterbilt, Volvo, and BYD, all of which have claimed ranges of around 300 miles per charge, and focus on regional-haul trucking rather than long-haul trucking like the Tesla and Windrose.

If Windrose can beat Tesla’s Semi to the mass market, it could be considerably more difficult for Tesla to regain that lost market share after already having missed deadlines and pricing targets. With additional deliveries scheduled for later this year and an American assembly facility planned, Windrose is setting itself up to disrupt the long-haul trucking industry.
