Unity Technologies, an American video game software development company, has recently introduced an open beta of its artificial intelligence (AI) tools for developers using Unity 6.
The new product, known as Unity AI, is a significant step in the company’s push to embed AI directly into game development workflows. Unity AI centres on an in-editor assistant designed to understand the structure and context of game projects.
According to Unity, the system is built to operate within the Editor, allowing developers to automate repetitive tasks while maintaining control over creative decisions. At the core of the release is an agentic assistant which includes features such as a planning mode, which helps translate early-stage ideas into structured development plans, and a system of modular “skills” tailored to specific aspects of game production, including user interface design and scene creation.
In a community post, Unity said the assistant can also identify bottlenecks by analysing profiler data and offer optimisation suggestions. The beta includes tools capable of generating placeholder materials, audio, cubemaps and both 2D and 3D assets. Developers can also use image references to build scenes or import design files from platforms such as Figma, which the assistant can convert into functional user interface (UI) layouts.
In addition to its in-house tools, Unity is allowing developers to connect third-party AI services through what it calls an AI Gateway. The company has also introduced a Model Context Protocol server, enabling developers to control the editor from external integrated development environments (IDE) or other large language model (LLM) applications.
