Chennai, September 15 (APAC Media): The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at IIT Madras is set to launch AI Studio to turn research ideas into startups.
The initiative aims to help researchers and entrepreneurs transform artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data science research into real- world startup ideas.
The studio will open for applications on 3 October, 2026. The programme will be open to IIT Madras and WSAI researchers and academic founders from other institutions, as well as external entrepreneurs with AI, ML, or data science ideas or existing early-stage ventures.
Six-Month Programme to Develop Business Ideas
Selected teams will receive support to turn research and early-stage concepts into viable businesses. This will include assessing market demand, developing products, validating customer needs, and preparing ventures for funding and potential incorporation into the IIT Madras incubation ecosystem.
Applicants will initially participate in a training programme and bootcamp, which will be open to a larger pool of candidates. A smaller group of ventures will subsequently be selected for the full AI Studio programme.
The selected startups will undergo a six-month development and evaluation programme, with the possibility of an extension of up to three months for ventures progressing towards an institutional funding round. AI Studio plans to conduct two cohorts annually, with applications opening during winter and spring cycles.
Funding, Labs, and Expert Support
Founders participating in the programme will have access to seed funding, cloud and computing credits, research laboratories, data and research resources, mentoring, and entrepreneurship training. Support will also come from an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, faculty members, and domain experts.
The initiative will allow founders to work closely with WSAI researchers and leverage the school’s laboratories and research capabilities while developing their technology and products.
Strengthening IIT Madras’ Deep-Tech Ecosystem
AI Studio is part of IIT Madras’ broader deep-tech incubation ecosystem. The institute said its incubation network has supported hundreds of deep-tech startups, with a combined valuation of $8 billion and more than 11,000 direct jobs created.
The new studio is expected to create a structured pathway from AI research and ideas to product development, funding, and potential company formation.
