Slate Auto, an EV startup backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has patented its new electric pickup truck in India. The startup is set to officially unveil the vehicle in the US later this month, and its patent filing in India hints at possible future plans for the market.

Slate Auto is expected to unveil its production-ready electric pickup truck on June 24, 2026. Interestingly, the vehicle has now been patented in India, raising speculation about its potential launch and future arrival in the country.
One of the biggest highlights of this EV is its highly flexible platform as the company builds these based on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) philosophy. Users can bring their own electronic gadgets and devices and attach with the vehicle.
It can function as a compact pickup truck, an SUV, or even an open-body utility vehicle by simply changing or removing body panels. This makes it highly practical for multiple use cases, especially for deliveries, cargo movement, and daily urban driving.
The vehicle follows a minimalist and boxy design with multiple body configurations. Buyers can customise the vehicle based on their requirements by choosing different features, body styles, and battery packs. This highly customisable build-to-order model makes the vehicle flexible for both personal and commercial users.
Powering the EV is a 201 bhp electric motor with a rear-wheel-drive setup. It will be available with two battery pack options, offering a claimed range of 241 km and 382 km. The vehicle will also support both AC and DC fast charging.
The official global debut is scheduled for later this month, while deliveries are expected to begin by late 2026. Pricing is expected to range between $20,000 and $28,000 (16L to 25L Indian rupees) depending on body style and battery choice, making it one of the most affordable and customisable electric utility vehicles.
Amazon has been steadily expanding its EV delivery fleet in India as part of its broader electrification strategy. With growing demand for electric commercial vehicles, this patent filing could signal wider opportunities for modular EV utility vehicles.
