SA-founded clinical AI startup Healthleap raises $38m seed, Series A funding - Disrupt Africa

South Africa-founded clinical AI startup Healthleap has raised US$38 million in combined seed and Series A funding as it looks to expand its offering to more conditions.

Founded in South Africa in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, Healthleap has developed a platform that screens hospital patients for conditions that often go undiagnosed.

The platform reads each patient’s full electronic health record (EHR) every morning, including notes, labs, vitals, orders and problem lists, and flags risk. It then pushes risk scores into clinicians’ existing EHR workflows, showing care teams which patients need attention first.

Healthleap has initially focused on malnutrition, but now plans to expand its offering to cover additional conditions after raising the US$38 million round. The funding came from Sequoia Capital, First Round Capital and Hummingbird Ventures, and will also be used to grow Healthleap’s engineering, sales, customer success and product teams. The platform will be expanded to cover conditions including congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers and a range of hospital-acquired infections.

“Every week, millions of patients leave hospitals with unresolved health conditions that will erode their health and cost up to 10x more to treat in the long term,” said Josiah Meyer, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Healthleap. “Our goal is to help improve care and save lives by identifying those conditions now.”

Alfred Lin, partner at Sequoia Capital, said Healthleap was focused on finding patients who are being missed and getting them the care they need.

“The impact for both patients and hospitals has been inspiring, with one hospital seeing 39 per cent more malnutrition cases identified and treated, and US$11 million in incremental revenue in a single health system,” he said.

Josh Kopelman, co-founder and partner at First Round Capital, said the firm was drawn to Healthleap’s vision of every hospital using real-time AI to spot overlooked clinical risk, improve care and unlock reimbursement revenue.
