With Megan Thee Stallion yet to arrive, one of the big viral moments of the Winter Olympics so far has been figure-skater Tomas-Llorenc Guarino Sabate’s Minions routine. AND there’s a music-licensing angle to his story.
Startup ClicknClear played a key role in clearing the music used for the routine, with founder Chantal Epp [pictured] writing on LinkedIn earlier this week about the frantic last-minute efforts to clear all the tracks – including “turning a denial from Universal Pictures into approval”.
Now there’s another boost for her company from a different Universal. UMG announced overnight that it has signed a global licensing deal with ClicknClear focused on music in “choreographed sports”.
(Think ice skating, but also gymnastics, dance, artistic swimming and dressage. Or as we will always prefer to think of the latter: horse dancing.)
It’s a big win for ClicknClear, which inked a Warner Music Group deal back in 2022, and has also signed up the likes of Believe, BMG and Concord for its roster. The startup first came to prominence when it won the pitch contest at our NY:LON Connect conference in 2019.
