PEAK6 Trials: $100,000 Founder Residency Program Launches To Build Fintech Startups In Austin

PEAK6, the Austin-based fintech operating company behind multiple billion-dollar businesses, has launched a new founder residency program designed to help entrepreneurs build fintech companies from the ground up.

Called PEAK6 Trials, the one-year residency will take place at the company’s headquarters in Austin, Texas. Each selected founder will receive a $100,000 salary and access to the company’s internal resources, technical teams, and a network of potential customers.

The program was created by PEAK6 co-founders Jenny Just and Matt Hulsizer, who launched the company in 1997 as an options trading firm and have since built, invested in, or turned around more than 200 businesses. The firm’s portfolio includes multiple multibillion-dollar companies, such as Apex Fintech Solutions and PEAK6 Capital Management, as well as businesses including FOCUS, WeInsure, and Zogo.

PEAK6 Trials is designed to move beyond traditional incubators by focusing on the development of operational companies rather than early-stage concept validation alone. Founders selected for the residency will be able to tap into PEAK6’s internal teams, including developers, legal advisors, and compliance specialists, to test, validate, and scale their ideas.

The company says the residency is intended to remove common barriers faced by early-stage founders by providing funding, technical resources, and direct customer access. Participants will also receive favorable equity terms, allowing founders to retain meaningful ownership while building their companies.

Unlike many startup programs, PEAK6 Trials will not operate in cohorts or include demo days. Instead, the residency will focus on a 12-month period dedicated to building companies with real customers and revenue.

The program is open to founders regardless of prior fintech experience. PEAK6 noted that its internal engineering team, including AI specialists, can help participants develop prototypes and potentially join the startups as technical leaders if the projects gain traction.

The initiative reflects PEAK6’s belief that advances in artificial intelligence have significantly reduced the time required to build early-stage products, shifting the main challenge for founders toward identifying the right ideas and gaining distribution.

Applications for the residency are now open, and the company expects to accept up to 12 participants. The anticipated acceptance rate is about 1%.

Founded in 1997 with $1.5 million in seed capital, PEAK6 has grown into a multibillion-dollar financial services organization. The firm continues to operate as a founder-led company and positions the new residency as a way to give entrepreneurs direct access to the networks and distribution channels that can accelerate company creation.

KEY QUOTES

“Unlike an incubator, we’re focused on creating real functioning companies. Ideas are great, but to become a fully functioning concept they require real-world trial, advising, and more. This residency provides the tools for this process. We’re removing the pain points, offering a $100,000 salary, and creating direct lines of communication and access to our teams for these founders to put their ideas into motion. We also are opening this program up to anyone, regardless of fintech experience, because of the expertise we have internally.”

Jenny Just — Co-Founder And Managing Partner, PEAK6

“AI has made it easier than ever to build. We are seeing what used to take years and a full engineering organization be prototyped in weeks. The harder part is knowing what to build and having the distribution to execute faster than your competition. More people are becoming founders than ever, so the same customers are getting inundated by ‘insert new AI startup’ as a result. Within the Trials program, entrepreneurs will get built-in design partners and early customers to test, validate and scale their ideas.”
