Surat broke into India’s list of top startup hubs in April 2023, when local ventures Zero Cow Factory and Video SDK together raised $5.2 Mn in a single month. For a city long defined by textiles and diamonds, that was its first real marker on the national funding map.
That April spike sat inside a breakout year. Surat startups raised about $6.9 Mn across five deals in 2023, close to a sixfold jump from the roughly $997K raised in 2022, and the city made its first entry into India’s top 10 emerging startup hubs that year. Much of the pull is geographic, with proximity to Ahmedabad and Mumbai making Surat a low-cost base for SaaS and IT teams. The base had been building quietly since 2017, when ShilpMIS became one of the first Surat ventures to close institutional seed capital.
Zero Cow Factory has gone on to raise more than $16 Mn for its animal-free dairy proteins, including a $4 Mn seed round co-led by Green Frontier Capital, GVFL and Pi Ventures, making it one of India’s few precision fermentation ventures. Textile-tech startup Fantail added an INR 13.75 Cr seed round co-led by Riverwalk Holdings, Incubate Fund Asia and All in Capital to modernise India’s fragmented man-made fibre weaving base, the sector closest to Surat’s existing manufacturing strength. Video SDK, the developer-tools venture behind real-time audio and video APIs, has raised about $1.2 Mn and was picked for Google’s AI First Accelerator in 2025, a signal of the city’s small but real B2B software base.
State-level capital is beginning to reach the city too. GVFL, the Gujarat government-backed venture firm that co-led Zero Cow Factory’s seed round, runs the Xcelerate accelerator with Marwari Catalysts, writing initial cheques of INR 75 Lakh to INR 2.5 Cr into Gujarat startups across health, food and agriculture. The three-month programme also plugs founders into a network of more than 100 entrepreneurs for mentoring and follow-on introductions, the kind of institutional scaffolding the city lacked when ShilpMIS first raised in 2017.
Precision fermentation, textile-tech and B2B tooling now sit alongside Surat’s traditional trade base, making it one of Gujarat’s fastest-emerging startup cities in 2026.
