OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google: report

OpenAI plans to buy AI chips from Google, according to a report by The Information, which cited a person familiar with the matter. No financial terms or other details were given in the report.

The move would bring the two firms closer together. They compete in AI products and search but have increasingly done business with each other. Last week, OpenAI said it would make its most advanced AI models available through Google Cloud, as per a Reuters report.

OpenAI is already one of the biggest buyers of Nvidia’s chips, which it uses to train and run its AI models. Reuters reported in June 2025 that it had started renting Google’s chips. Google’s Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, have become a popular cheaper alternative to Nvidia’s, and Google began selling them directly to some customers this year. Deals with firms including rival Anthropic have helped boost demand, according to the report.

OpenAI is also building its own chip. In June, it unveiled its first custom AI processor, designed with Broadcom, and said it plans to start using it by the end of this year.

The news comes as Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet plan to spend as much as $600 billion combined on AI infrastructure this year, while investors increasingly ask when that spending will pay off, says Reuters.
