Melbourne-based healthcare technology startup Cenaris has been named a finalist in the AI Awards for Innovation in Healthcare, after attracting significant interest from Australian NDIS providers looking to move away from last-minute, audit-driven compliance.
In an industry where compliance can often become a frantic exercise in paperwork and preparation in the lead-up to an audit, a young Australian technology company is trying to turn the model on its head.
Cenaris is an intuitive AI-powered compliance operating system designed to help healthcare and NDIS providers maintain continuous compliance and daily audit readiness, allowing users to see their compliance gaps and risk and then remediate them in realtime.
And the company says one of the most surprising developments has been who is using it.
Even unregistered NDIS providers — businesses that are not required to undergo an external audit, are turning to the platform voluntarily.
“They don’t have to be audited, but they’re telling us they want to operate as though they could be audited tomorrow. That says a lot. Providers are recognising that compliance isn’t just paperwork or something you prepare for when an auditor arrives. Done properly, it creates safer organisations and, ultimately, better care,” says Cenaris Co-Founder and CEO Adam.
“That’s a really important shift. Compliance shouldn’t just be about getting through an audit. It should be about running a better, safer organisation every day.”
Unregistered providers are also using Cenaris to get their registration, at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. The platform walks them through the process and gives them the documentation needed for their certification audit, with the platform designed to translate complex requirements into practical actions providers can understand and follow.
Built by people who understand the problem
Cenaris was born from a simple frustration: the founders believed existing approaches to compliance were too fragmented, reactive and difficult for to navigate.
Adam, a psychologist and Allied Health exec, had experienced the realities of healthcare compliance and audits firsthand.
His co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer Natasha brings more than a decade of experience in SaaS and digital transformation, having worked across some of the world’s leading technology companies.
Rather than building another generic document-management platform and adding AI to it, the pair set out to build an AI-native software specifically around the compliance problems care providers face.
“We didn’t want to take generic software, put an AI label on it and call it innovation, we wanted to build something that actually understands the problem.” Natasha explains.
Taking a different approach to the AI boom
The company’s approach comes at a time when businesses across Australia are racing to adopt AI, amid an explosion of so-called “vibe coding” — using AI tools to rapidly generate software without necessarily having traditional software engineering expertise and security.
Cenaris deliberately took the opposite approach.
The platform has been developed by a professional software engineering team, with bespoke AI built specifically around the compliance use cases.
Rather than relying on the open web to generate answers, Cenaris says its AI is built around thousands of best practice policies, standards, legislation and curated compliance content relevant to the providers it serves.
“It’s not going to hallucinate based on someone’s Reddit post from 2018”, Natasha laughed.
The company’s ambition is to make compliance technology not only more intelligent, but more dependable.
It also offers an Audit Pass Guarantee, reflecting the founders’ confidence in the system and its ability to help providers prepare for audits.
An early-stage company making an early impact
For Cenaris, being named an AI Awards finalist is particularly significant given how recently the company entered the market.
The startup has already begun signing healthcare and NDIS providers, while continuing to develop the platform around feedback from the organisations using it.
One example is its newly developed form-building capability.
During its initial pilot, forms were not identified as a major requirement. But after demonstrating the live product to prospective customers, providers repeatedly began asking whether Cenaris could also help them manage and build the forms required as part of their compliance processes.
The development team responded by building the functionality.
It is an example of the company’s broader philosophy: build around the real problems providers are experiencing, rather than simply building technology for technology’s sake.
“We’re listening to providers and building around them,” says Natasha.
“The most exciting thing is when someone says, ‘I wish it could do this,’ and our response is, ‘Okay, let’s build it!”
For an industry grappling with increasing regulatory expectations, workforce pressures and the growing complexity of compliance, the founders believe technology could help shift the conversation.
Their goal is no longer simply to help providers survive an audit.
It is to make being ready for one an everyday part of running a healthcare organisation.
And with Cenaris now a finalist for Innovation in Healthcare at the AI Awards, the startup is betting that the future of compliance is not more paperwork.
It’s intelligence, visibility and continuous readiness.
