Greater Noida News (25/12/2025): The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, through its Centre for Medical Innovation (CMI) under the GIMS Foundation, successfully organised a National Startup Clinic on 23 December 2023, positioning itself as a leading public-sector platform for affordable, clinically relevant, and Made-in-India medical technology innovation.
The online event, hosted from the GIMS campus, brought together MedTech startups from across the country along with eminent clinicians, engineers, and innovation leaders from premier institutions including IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar, AIIMS Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh), JIPMER Puducherry, and GIMS. The Startup Clinic enabled direct, clinician-led engagement with startups to discuss the development of cost-effective, scalable medical devices tailored to India’s healthcare needs.
Participants noted that the Startup Clinic successfully united national and international voices—from India to the United Kingdom—on a single platform, covering the entire spectrum of healthcare innovation. Discussions focused on emerging and critical areas such as artificial intelligence in trauma care and radiology, emergency and pediatric care, surgery, women’s health, pregnancy-related care, and preventive oncology, highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in advancing affordable MedTech solutions.
The event was organised under the leadership of the Director, GIMS, whose vision has played a pivotal role in building a strong MedTech innovation ecosystem within a government hospital setting, aligned with national priorities of self-reliance, accessibility, and patient-centric healthcare.

Leadership Emphasises Innovation in Public Hospitals
Addressing the gathering, the Director, GIMS, said that public hospitals must go beyond service delivery and act as drivers of innovation. Public hospitals should not only provide healthcare but also serve as engines of innovation. At GIMS, we are committed to creating an ecosystem where clinicians, startups, and academic institutions collaborate to develop affordable, Made-in-India medical technologies that directly address patient needs. The National Startup Clinic reflects our alignment with the Government of Uttar Pradesh’s vision of innovation-led healthcare transformation, the Director said.
Dr. Rahul Singh, CEO of the Centre for Medical Innovation (CMI), GIMS Foundation, highlighted the importance of hospital-based innovation in India’s MedTech journey.
He said, Clinician-led, need-driven innovation is the missing link in India’s MedTech ecosystem. Through CMI GIMS, we focus on co-creating solutions with startups within real clinical environments. Platforms like the Startup Clinic ensure that Made-in-India technologies are not only innovative but also practical, affordable, and ready for adoption in public healthcare systems.
Focus on ‘Make in India’ and Affordable Healthcare
Speakers across various sessions strongly emphasised the need to design and manufacture medical devices in India that are affordable, clinically usable, and scalable across district hospitals and public healthcare facilities. Panelists stressed that innovation anchored within public hospitals helps ensure that technologies remain aligned with real-world clinical workflows and patient care challenges.
Several participants also appreciated the Government of Uttar Pradesh for its proactive and forward-looking support to MedTech innovation through initiatives such as StartInUP. They noted that such initiatives have enabled public hospital–based incubators like CMI GIMS to emerge as national models for clinician-led innovation.

Eminent Speakers and Panelists
The National Startup Clinic featured a distinguished panel of experts, including:
Prof. Subramani Kanagaraj, Faculty, IIT Guwahati, associated with the School of Innovation in Biomedical Devices and Systems and the International Biodesign Centre
Dr. Sivakumar Manickam, Lead Paediatric Radiologist, Mid and South Essex University Hospitals NHS Trust (UK) and Honorary Senior Lecturer, King’s College London
Dr. Arpitha A, Associate Professor, Gynecologic Oncology, JIPMER Puducherry
Dr. Brig. Rakesh Gupta, expert in pediatric and critical care accessibility
Dr. Navdeep Ahuja, Member Secretary, Innovation and Incubation Cell, AIIMS Bilaspur (Himachal Pradesh)

Dr. Mohit Mathur, Professor of Surgery, GIMS, with expertise in laparoscopic, endovascular, trauma, and pediatric surgery
Dr. Rahul Singh, CEO, CMI GIMS Foundation, who also moderated the sessions
The deliberations reinforced the view that meaningful and affordable healthcare innovation must originate from public hospitals, where high patient volumes, diverse clinical challenges, and cost sensitivities intersect. The Startup Clinic further strengthened GIMS’s position as a national convenor for MedTech innovation, demonstrating how state-supported public institutions can lead India’s journey toward self-reliant and inclusive healthcare technology.
The success of the National Startup Clinic also underlined Uttar Pradesh’s growing role as a MedTech innovation hub, aligned with national goals of Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, and equitable access to quality healthcare for all.
