Google will invest at least €13 billion, or about $15.1 billion, in artificial intelligence infrastructure in Finland over two years in what it describes as its largest single investment in Europe.
The spending, planned for 2027 and 2028, will cover data centres, electricity-grid upgrades, and clean-energy and battery projects. The infrastructure will support Google services including Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube.
Finland has emerged as an increasingly attractive location for data centres because its cold climate can reduce cooling costs. At the same time, its power system provides access to substantial supplies of low-carbon electricity. Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance are among other technology companies investing in infrastructure in the country.
Google estimates the construction phase will contribute about $3.6 billion to Finland’s gross domestic product. Once operational, the investment is projected to support about 7,000 jobs annually.
Finnish prime minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the decision, arguing that the economic value of the data sector extends beyond direct investment into research, development, and innovation.
The Finnish expansion is part of Alphabet’s much broader spending programme as technology companies race to secure the computing power required for increasingly demanding AI models.
