GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A healthcare startup is establishing its headquarters in downtown Grand Rapids.
Root Functional Medicine is now leasing space inside 120 Ionia Ave. SW near Cherry Street SW. The 3,920-square-foot space is located on the building’s second floor.
The company’s goal is to “go beyond surface-level symptoms to address root causes,” according to its website. Offering access to lab testing, certified physicians and dietitians, Root Functional Medicine promises to lower healthcare costs, reduce claims and improve retention for employers. The company uses its software platform, rootOS, to deliver care.

Root was founded in 2022 by Dr. Erica Armstrong, a Grand Rapids family physician. It’s backed by Wisconsin-based venture capital firm HealthX Ventures, which added Root to its portfolio this summer.
“As a physician, author, and entrepreneur, my focus is on creating the future of healthcare: one where care is proactive, personalized, and powered by both human connection and technology,” Armstrong stated. “Between this recent capital investment and our expanded offices and team, I believe we can solve what conventional healthcare leaves unsolved: chronic disease, fragmented care, and the absence of true prevention.”

JLL Grand Rapids Real Estate and economic development agency The Right Place helped Root Functional Medicine find the space, the two said in a release.
