UNESCO estimates that 57% of the world’s children lack basic skills. Sub-Saharan African economies pay the steepest price. UNESCO projects they will lose 26% of GDP in 2030 if children there fail to acquire those skills.
The Opportunity
The Atlassian Foundation wants to fund coalitions working on that gap. The Foundation will deploy US$8 million over two years for learners from under-resourced communities.
It will only fund partnerships and each partnership can request up to US$1 million over two years. Winners also join a peer learning cohort and get Atlassian software and staff expertise.
The Foundation already backs three partners.
- Mantra4Change works with government schools in two Indian states to teach adolescents AI literacy.
- Teach For All has teachers from under-resourced schools shaping classroom AI use across its 63-country network.
- CareerVillage leads a US coalition of more than 195 organizations building AI career coaching for under-served youth.
Registered nonprofits in any country can apply. Initiatives must meet all three of the Foundation’s criteria:
- Direct relief of disadvantage for a clearly identified beneficiary group.
- Collective action, meaning multiple organizations sharing goals, delivery, and learning on a systemic problem.
- Education change in the AI era. Applicants that use AI must show deliberate use with safeguards. Applicants that do not use AI must justify that choice.
The collective action test will disqualify most single-implementer ICT4D projects. An edtech company or a lone NGO with a promising app does not qualify on its own.
