Goyal, USTR Greer hold talks on India-US trade deal at WTO meet

Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal and US trade representative Jamieson Greer held a meeting on the sidelines of the 14TH WTO Ministerial Conference in Yaounde, Cameroon on March 27.

Goyal, in a post on X, said he had a “production discussion” with Greer on various topics, including India-US trade deal and WTO agenda.

“Had a very productive discussion with @USTradeRep Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the WTO Ministerial Conference. Exchanged views on the #WTOMC14 agenda, next steps in the India-US BTA negotiations and explored ways to further deepen our economic cooperation and bilateral trade ties,” Goyal said.

India and the US are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement aimed at easing tariff barriers and expanding market access across key sectors. The talks gained momentum after both sides agreed to resolve several outstanding trade disputes and work towards a more comprehensive pact.

At the WTO conference, Goyal called on member nations to rebuild trust and return to consensus-based decision-making, terming it the “non-negotiable bedrock” of the multilateral trading system. Speaking at a ministerial breakout session on decision-making and past mandates on March 27, he stressed that restoring confidence among members is key to revitalising the WTO.
