Nigerian fintech startup Xpend AI emerged victorious at the 2026 Startup World Cup Lagos Regional, clinching first place out of 11 finalists last Thursday in a competition that drew over 100 entries from across the country. The win secures the company a place at the Grand Finale in Silicon Valley, where a $1 million investment prize awaits.
Founded by Ugwuagba Benard, Xpend AI is pioneering a payments solution that transforms WhatsApp into a self-service tool for bills, subscriptions and daily transactions. By integrating artificial intelligence into everyday messaging platforms, the startup aims to eliminate “peer-to-peer anxiety,” making digital payments seamless for millions of Nigerians and ultimately, for Africa at large.
“From over 100 entries down to 10 finalists and becoming number one, our work once more is being validated,” said Ugwuagba, CEO of Xpend AI. “We are grateful to the teams at Startup World Cup and TechUniteAfrica for providing the opportunity to showcase to the world what we’ve built and how we plan to revolutionize money movement in Nigeria, Africa and subsequently globally.”
Valentine Ugwu, COO and cofounder, emphasized the strategic significance of the win: “This isn’t just a trophy. It’s proof that the future of payments in Africa is being built, and we’re at the center of it. From local beginnings to representing Nigeria on the global stage in San Francisco, this moment means everything. But we’re just getting started.”
The startup’s technology leverages stablecoins and crypto-enabled infrastructure to facilitate frictionless transactions, addressing one of Africa’s most persistent barriers to financial inclusion which is trust and usability in digital payments. By embedding these tools into platforms like WhatsApp, which boasts over 100 million users across Africa, Xpend AI positions itself at the intersection of user accessibility and cutting-edge fintech innovation.
Analysts note that Africa’s digital payment ecosystem is growing rapidly. According to a recent McKinsey report, digital transactions on the continent are projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2030, driven by mobile penetration, fintech innovation and a young, tech-savvy population. Xpend AI’s recognition at Startup World Cup underscores the continent’s emerging global influence in fintech.
The Startup World Cup, hosted regionally by TechUniteAfrica, has become a premier platform for African startups to gain visibility, mentorship and capital. Past regional winners have gone on to secure significant investments, expand internationally and contribute to building Africa-led innovation ecosystems.
Benard confirmed that the company will continue refining its product to meet Africa’s payment needs, signaling ambitions beyond Nigeria. “We’re steadfast in providing seamless services for our users, and this is just day one,” he said.
The Lagos victory positions Xpend AI as a flagship example of African-led entrepreneurship driving tangible innovation. As the team prepares for the global stage, all eyes will be on Silicon Valley to see whether this homegrown solution can secure international validation and $1 million in investment to scale across the continent and beyond.
