Anthropic has acquired AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio in a deal worth about $400 million, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

Coefficient Bio’s team will join Anthropic’s healthcare and life sciences group. The group has developed tools needed for biotech workflows, from drug discovery to clinical commercialisation. Founded last fall, Coefficient Bio has developed a platform that enables AI to carry out biotech tasks such as drawing up drug research and development plans, managing clinical regulatory strategies and discovering new drug candidates. It has fewer than 10 employees.

The Information said the deal comes as Anthropic focuses on building AI tools aimed at specific industries such as finance, cybersecurity and life sciences.

Anthropic added features to Claude in October last year to connect with tools frequently used by scientists such as Benchling and BioRender. In January this year, it also added research automation features such as drafting regulatory documents and clinical trial protocols.

Anthropic also has partnerships with life sciences companies including Sanofi, Novo Nordisk, Genmab, AbbVie, the Allen Institute and HHMI. In January this year, it also expanded into healthcare to allow doctors, insurers and healthcare companies to use Claude for medical tasks in a HIPAA-compliant environment.
