YouTube is introducing AI-powered custom feeds that will allow users to describe the videos they want to see, giving viewers more direct control over recommendations on the platform.
The feature lets users create specialised feeds around particular interests, activities, or moods instead of relying solely on YouTube’s standard recommendation system. YouTube says Custom Feeds will be available to users in the US across the web, mobile devices, and televisions this autumn.
Users can enter natural-language instructions describing the type of content they want. The system uses Google’s Gemini AI technology to interpret those requests and generate the personalised feed. The resulting feeds will supplement rather than replace YouTube’s existing home-page recommendations.
The feature represents an effort to give viewers greater influence over recommendation systems that have traditionally been determined largely by viewing history and platform algorithms.
YouTube unveiled Custom Feeds as part of its Made On YouTube 2026 announcements. The company is also expanding its use of AI elsewhere, including conversational editing tools for creators and AI features within YouTube Music.
