The United States and China have agreed to establish a formal dialogue on artificial intelligence and pursue lower tariffs on $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction following Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington.
The agreements followed three days of meetings between Xi and US President Donald Trump, which ended on September 25. Both governments subsequently announced plans for further discussions on AI technology and trade.
Under the trade agreement, the two sides reached a consensus on more favourable tariff treatment covering $30 billion of goods moving in each direction.
The White House said the US exports covered include agricultural products, seafood, wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices, while Reuters reported that Chinese exports covered by the arrangement include products such as small appliances, toys, and decorations.
The governments also agreed to create a bilateral dialogue covering the risks and benefits associated with advanced AI. The next round is planned for November, and the two countries intend to establish a communication channel for AI-related incidents.
The White House referred to the initiative as the US-China “Super Intelligence” Dialogue, while China’s Foreign Ministry continued to describe the discussions as an artificial intelligence dialogue. Beijing said the two sides should increase communication as the technology develops.
