Google restricts Meta's access to Gemini AI models: report

Google has placed limits on Meta’s use of its Gemini artificial intelligence models after the social media giant sought more computing capacity than Google could supply, the Financial Times recently reported.

The restrictions, communicated around March, have disrupted and delayed some of Meta’s internal AI projects, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the newspaper.

Other Google clients have also faced reduced access, though to a lesser extent, the report added. Meta has been particularly affected because of its exceptionally high demand. In response, the company has encouraged staff to be more efficient with the AI tokens they use.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the report. The constraints highlight a wider industry challenge: even as technology companies pour billions into chips and data centres, securing enough computing power to meet surging AI demand remains difficult.
